Keeping Errors at Bay 4 Levels

Keeping Errors at Bay – Bertrand Russel, England (1872-1970)

Literal Comprehension

“Keeping Errors at Bay” provides us about what are the things for making errors and how can we avoid them or what are the basic approaches for removing our foolish ideas, fear, and feeling of superiority, selfishness, and biases. Russel says that we can be free from most of the errors and blind belief if we use scientific methods, observation, experiences, and common and critical senses. To him, modern people are proud of their race, nationality, gender, power, and discriminations. Even in the past, this trend was not untouched. For example; Aristotle used to believe that women have fewer teeth than men. Russell says that we should not judge something or somebody on the ground of baseless opinion. The decision should be made on knowledge, not on opinion. In addition, we should be aware of the opinions of those people who don’t agree with us.

Russell talks about different ways and factors of stupid or wrong opinions, selfishness, prejudice, superiority feelings, feeling of fear and discrimination. So, this essay tries to make us alert against the superstitions and nonsensical ideas. Therefore, positive attitudes, awareness of language, culture, respect of opposite opinions and knowledge are the basic qualities for avoiding mistakes in our life.

Critical Thinking

Blind and prejudice beliefs are harmful to us from the past to the present period. Human beings are still carrying on foolish opinions in spite of the development of science and technology. Russell says that we can get rid of most of the errors in our day to day life if we use scientific methods, develop wisdom. However, some questions seem to be controversial; for example, “How can we say that working without committing the error is only one part of great learning? How can we compare such things with those of others?

This essay is very interesting, instructive persuasive and moral. After reading this essay, I have been realizing that selfishness, blind belief, prejudice, fear and feeling of superiority in terms of level, class, gender, race, religion, and region are the major causes that lead us towards committing many errors in our day to day life. Therefore, it has provided me a moral lesson to develop my positive attitude, the concept of equality, equity, and justice, use of science and technology, feelings of co-operation and freedom to all human beings in order to remove those accidental or serious and silly errors from daily life. if so, the life resolves with wisdom and becomes progressive as well as successful.
